In November 2017, Germany announced a voluntary contribution of €300,000 to the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV). The unrestricted contribution enables the TFV to continue activities under its assistance and reparations mandates, delivering reparative justice to victims of crimes under the jurisdiction of the ICC.

Welcoming the contribution from Germany, Pieter de Baan, the Trust Fund’s Executive Director, said: “Victims of ICC crimes have a right to a remedy for the harms they suffered. The contribution of Germany, a long-standing partner of the Trust Fund for Victims, will help us support victims and their families on their path of healing and recovery so that they can successfully rebuild their lives.”

The pursuit of reparative justice is a truly innovative feature of the Rome Statute. In 2002, the Trust Fund for Victims was established at the ICC, in order to support recovery and resilience for to victims of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes.

The Trust Fund provides assistance to victims, their families, and affected communities in situations under the jurisdiction of the ICC. Central to the aims of reparative justice, the Trust Fund also implements Court-ordered reparations awards by convicted persons to their victims.

To date, Germany has donated about €3,5 million to the Trust Fund for Victims since 2006.
