On Monday, 25 September 2017, the Egyptian American law professor Cherif Bassiouni passed away. Remembering Mr. Bassiouni as the “father of international criminal law”, the Trust Fund for Victims at the International Criminal Court (ICC) recalls his immense impact on victims’ rights in international law. “Cherif Bassiouni was a distinguished advocate for victims of mass atrocities,” said Mr. Noguchi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Fund.

The President of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Judge Silvia Fernández de Gurmendi, was received by His Holiness Pope Francis at the Vatican on Friday 15 September 2017. Board member of the Trust Fund for Victims (TFV), Felipe Michelini, joined the delegation on the visit to the Vatican.

On 25 July 2017, The Trust Fund for Victims (“the Trust Fund”) at the International Criminal Court (“ICC” or “Court”) presented to ICC Trial Chamber II a draft implementation plan for individual and collective reparations according to the order for reparations against Germain Katanga.
On 25 July 2017, the Trust Fund for Victims submits its draft implementation plan with respect to Trial Chamber II’s order for reparations of 24 March 2017 in the Katanga case. In its order for reparations, the Trial Chamber ordered awards for reparations to 297 identified victims, comprised of an individual symbolic compensation award of $250 to each victim and four collective awards to all identified victims in the form of housing assistance, education assistance, income generating activities, and psychological rehabilitation.
WHAT IS THE DRAFT IMPLEMENTATION PLAN?
On 25 July 2017, the Trust Fund for Victims (Trust Fund) submitted the draft implementation plan (DIP) for reparations in the Katanga case, as ordered by Trial Chamber II on 24 March 2017. The Trial Chamber previously granted the Trust Fund an extension for the filing of the DIP. The DIP describes the projects and services that the Trust Fund intends to implement for the individual and collective awards ordered by the Trial Chamber.

On 25 May 2017, on behalf of the Delegation of the European Union, the EU Member States and Norway represented in Uganda, H.E. Henk Jan Bakker, the Ambassador of the Netherlands to Uganda, announced Pamela Angwech, Founder & Executive Director of Gulu Women’s Economic Development &Globalization (GWED-G) to be the winner of the 2017 EU Human Rights Defenders Award.
